Our Company History
Syngenta has a rich history of over 50 years of operations in Bangladesh, amid several mergers and acquisitions globally during the period. Syngenta AG is a global agrochemical company based in Basel, Switzerland and one of the leading agriculture companies in the world. Syngenta was formed in 2000 by the merger of Novartis Agribusiness and Astra Zeneca Agrochemicals. Delving into Syngenta history of operation in Bangladesh, Ciba-Geigy which was a result of a merger between the two entities Ciba and Geigy in 1970. Ciba-Geigy started its operation in Bangladesh in 1973 after the independence of the country. Then Ciba-Geigy merged with Sandoz and formed Novartis in 1996. However, after 4 years, Novartis Agribusiness and Astra Zeneca Agrochemicals merged again in 2000 to form Syngenta.
Syngenta Bangladesh has become one of the most prominent names when it comes to agricultural solutions and products in Bangladesh. It is a joint venture public limited company, where 60% of the shares are held by Syngenta AG Switzerland and 40% of the shares are held by the Bangladesh Government through BCIC (Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation). Syngenta Bangladesh’s head office is located at Dhanmondi in Dhaka with three zonal, eleven regional offices across the country. Besides, it has a crop protection formulation plant situated in Chattogram, a Seeds processing plant situated in Bogura and four site offices Bogura, Jashore, Gazipur, and Chattogram. It also has a state- of- the- art Learning and Development center in Bogura to conduct training, workshops, seminars for Syngenta employees, stockists, retailers, farmers, professional spray men, and relevant stakeholders as well.
Since launching, Syngenta Bangladesh is fully committed in supporting the farmers of Bangladesh to grow food in a sustainable way to meet the rising demand for the growing population in the country. It will continue its growers’ centric offer by bringing high-quality seeds, planting technology and crop protection solutions to help the smallholder farmers to increase yield, production, and quality of their crops. Besides, Syngenta Bangladesh has also a number of stewardship activities focusing on safe applications of pesticides.
